by John Overall
Hollywood a world of make believe and dreams where everyone dreams
of being a star. Known to the world as "Hollywood North"
Vancouver's movie scene has taken off dramatically over the past
few years yet, what many people forget is that this scene has been
growing slowly in the underground world for decades.
David
Spaner's book "Dreaming in the Rain" How Vancouver Became
Hollywood North by Northwest. The tracing of the making of Vancouver's
movie and TV industry is a superb story that is filled with unexpected
names and places.
Spaner does an first-rate job of tracing the
industry from its early beginnings in the forties though its turbulent
times of the sixty's and into the present day he includes vast amounts
of anecdotes about the clash from Hollywood south.
Spaner does a outstanding job of bringing to
life the mover and shakers of the early Vancouver movie scene. Spaner
fills the pages with names such as Molly Parker, Carrie-Anne Moss,
Mel Tuck, Greg Midleton, Michael J. Fox, and Tommy Chong.
Describing the conflict between North and South
at the start of chapter 13 Spaner says, "There was an instance
during the filming of The 13th Warrior when North met South. "Ice
niggers," the American director John McTiernam shouted at the
Vancouver crew." This is but a sampling of the conflicts between
Hollywood North and South.
This book belies the cover and title,
which at first seem to be just another boring history of the industry
yet from the start Spaner grabs your attention and keeps it throughout.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone one who likes movies.
