Just another “Homemaker”

Dear Editor:
I am just and ordinary Canadian with simple opinions. Yet I couldn't help express the confusion I feel over this whole affair. I suspect many Canadians feel the same way. This just makes me wonder where will this all lead to in 10 years time.
Thank you for reading. Suzanne

There is an embarrassing word going around, at least one that carries with it an ashamed pitch when expressed by many people of the day. This sort of thing has gone on for a number of years now and I am not even sure people realize the half shocked half embarrassed attitude when they use the term.
“You are just a Homemaker.” “What else do you do?” “You don't work.” “How can you stand staying at home?” “You mean there are still those around.” “Choke…a what! A Homemaker!”
Gone are the days when the word ‘Homemaker' carried some dignity and honour to its calling. People weren't ashamed to say, “I am a Homemaker.” To answer the questions above, “ I am not just a Homemaker. I am a proud Homemaker. I work at home, taking care of household, my family, a disabled girl, doing other things, which are important to me, such as art and writing. I enjoy staying at home because I work for myself doing what I love. I will never get rich as a Homemaker, but the calling is priceless. Homemakers are not extinct, yet!
Society needs to put the title ‘Homemaker” back on top of the list of honourable things to do. Not that working as a parent is dishonourable. It is just that Homemaking can be considered a little more than a career choice. It could be called a calling. It takes a lot of guts to admit to being a Homemaker nowadays. Most of the time, a blank look stares back at me when I tell a person I am one. It's as if the person goes into shock for a moment or two.
There are worst things in a life a person can do. Homemaking isn't one of them.
