BEHIND THE LENS, Victorias
first Annual Kids Film Festival is a daylong
event for kids from 7-18.
Featuring Victoria Film School founder Barry Casson as keynote
speaker, the
festival is hosted by Narnia Productions which has been working
with young
filmmakers to create original films to be screened at Esquimalt
Community
Theatre at 7 p.m. August 22nd. Admission is by a suggested donation
of $5,
the proceeds going to cover costs and toward fundraising efforts
for upgrading Esquimalt Theatre. The screening will be preceded
by a Gala in honour of the filmmakers which will be attended by
local dignitaries including Esquimalt mayor Darwin Robinson.
Local filmmakers and teachers Tim and Joan Herron have been offering
hands-on workshops in theatre, stagecraft and filmmaking to the
youth since
1996. This year they teamed up with Esquimalt Parks and Recreation,
Juan de Fuca Recreation and Cinevic Filmmakers Cooperative
to offer unique one and two week camps which have kids creating
complete original films on a
shoestring budget and tight production schedule. The results are
nothing
short of amazing for kids who have never met, but who learn to
work as a
team and who derive invaluable skills and experience through the
process.
Some of these filmmaking techniques and skills used in filmmaking
will be
demonstrated during the BEHIND THE LENS festival workshops which
will be held at Juan de Fuca Receations Centennial Park
Recreation Centre and
includes a lighting seminar with Barry Casson, animation with
Gilbert Taggart and Scott Clarke, an editing workshop with Chris
Kruger along with free demonstrations on makeup, screenwriting,
acting and directing.
The hour long seminars are
held between 1 and 5 p.m. and are open to kids and adults A nominal
fee of $5 per session or $15 for all four sessions is being
charged to cover expenses. Free demonstrations will be held in
the foyer of
Centennial Centre between 1 and 5 p.m. and all budding actors,
directors and
filmmakers are encouraged to attend.
