Roots
Works by Deanna Georgeson and
Sandra Levy
July 2 to 26, 2003
The Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery presents
Roots, an exhibition of works
by Deanna Georgeson and Sandra Levy, in the University's McPherson
Library
Gallery.
Deanna Georgeson is an award-winning Nanaimo
artist, currently studying in
the United Kingdom. Her 'Grandmother series' celebrates her heritage
through monotypes of Georgeson's own Grandmother, a B.C. pioneer
who raised
five childredn by herself and is soon to celebrate her 91st birthday.
A
past member of the Nanaimo Art Gallery's Board of Directors, Georgeson
studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, as well as
Emily Carr
College of Art and Design in Vancouver, before teaching art at Malaspina
University-College.
Sandra Levy, a native of Montreal, has combined
her training in botany and
the visual arts in 'Trees', her series of charcoal and dry pastel
works on
paper. For Levy, "drawing is the most immediate and intimate
form of art.
Charcoal acts as an extension of my fingers, enabling me to encompass
the
shapes and textures of these most expressive organisms." She
has studied at
the Ecole Des Beaux Arts de Quebec as well as Concordia University
and
Arizona State University. She now resides in Victoria
Both artists have exhibited widely throughout
Canada. Their works are
linked not only by a similar sensual style, but by their connections
to
British Columbia itself. Georgeson explores her sense of place through
her
own "roots" in its human history, while Levy finds hers
through the natural
world.
