Sandy Scofield has been playing all over Canada
this past year, and is soon to hit the shores of Australia. Last
fall she released Ketwam (in Cree, Until next time), a CD she produced
and released on her own Kokum label that expresses traditional songs
in vocal harmonies (and some with band accompaniment). Ketwam is
up for the first Western Canadian Music Awards (WCMA) held on Sept.
27 and 28 in Regina where Sandy will be performing at the gala dinner
this Saturday.
Ketwam is also nominated for five awards at
the National Aboriginal Music Awards: Best Folk Album, Best Traditional
Album - Contemporary; Best Album Design (Marty Dolan/Wreglesworth
Design/ George Littlechild); Best Producer / Engineer (Sandy Scofield
/ Shael Wrinch), and Best Songwriter (Sandy Scofield for "Ketwam").
Two years ago, Sandy's Riel's Road CD won two
National Aboriginal Music Awards, for Alternative album, and Song
of the Year for "Beat the Drum", and Sandy was invited
to play on the show at Torontos Skydome. Riel's Road was also
nominated for a Juno Award in the Aboriginal category in 2002.
Now that's some harvest!
In addition, Sandy was invited to have Ketwam
tracks included on four more international compilations, making
a total of a twelve compilations in all that she has contributed
to in her career. This includes a track from Riels Road appearing
on Sweetgrass/EMI's Skin Tight Blues in 2002. The WCMAs are
sending their nominee compilation into listeners' hands inside 15,000
cases of Big Rock beer with Sandys track Nitsiwakun included.
The Canada Council selected Sandy for it's November industry showcases,
Exposed Roots, in Montreal November 21 - 23, and a track from Ketwam
for its accompanying compilation.
Join Sandy and her superb band for songs from Ketwam at the Railway
Club - plus special guests, award-winning Dene singer Leela Gilday
and local hip hop artists Manik (Haida/Cree) and Os12 (Sto:lo Nation).
Next, see Sandy at the 2003 Sacred Music Festival,
November 11 at the Croation Centre before she goes to Montreal followed
by her departure for dates in Australia beginning with the Nígan
Girra Festival in Albury on November 30.
